Yeniköy (Neochori) historically had three Orthodox parishes; the church of the Virgin Koumariotissa was the centre of the upper quarter, Kefalochori (Köybaşı). The present church was built in 1837 under a firman of Sultan Mahmud II. It is a three-aisled basilica in a raised courtyard reached by steps, with a three-storey bell tower with a wooden dome on its west side; the interior decoration combines neoclassical and Baroque elements. The courtyard holds the graves of the Karatheodori family, among them that of Alexander Karatheodori Pasha, as well as a bust of the poet Constantine Cavafy, who lived in Yeniköy from 1882 to 1885.
A common school operated in Yeniköy as early as 1764; in 1884 the community maintained the Ioannideio primary school (founded 1843), a Greek school and the Zografeio girls’ school (founded 1871).
