The Zappeion school for girls was founded with funding from Konstantinos Zappas and began teaching in September 1875. It was first housed in a rented building in the Mnimatakia area; today it occupies a multi-storey building near Taksim Square, next to the church of Hagia Triada. Until the 1999–2000 school year it admitted only girls of the Greek Orthodox community; today it is a co-educational school. In May 2025 the school celebrated 150 years of continuous operation with a concert and a theatre performance by its pupils.
