The foundation bears the names of the two churches of the Kontoskali (Kumkapı) community, Agia Kyriaki and Panagia Elpida.
Agia Kyriaki was rebuilt in 1730, 1865 and 1894; the present building dates from 1894. It is a domed church with two bell towers, standing on a small rise inside a walled courtyard reached by stairs from the north and the south; for this reason it is known locally as “the church with stairs”.
Panagia Elpida is mentioned by the German traveller Stephan Gerlach in 1576 and was rebuilt in 1652, after fires. The foundations of the present cross-plan church, with a dome and two bell towers, were laid on 4 June 1895. Its courtyard contains the holy spring (ayazma) of Saint George and the building of the community school, which stopped operating in 1957.
