The church of St Nicholas in Ypsomatheia (Samatya) is already mentioned in a list of Istanbul churches from 1593. After a fire destroyed it in 1782 there were efforts to rebuild it, and the present church was built in the 1830s. It is a three-aisled basilica entered through the narthex and holds icons older than the rebuilding, apparently brought from other churches of the area. South of the narthex is the holy spring (ayazma) of St Nicholas. From 1850 the community also had a Greek school, which operated for only a short time. According to the community, services are held on the feasts of St Nicholas and of St Phanourios (27 August), and on some Sundays in rotation with the other churches of the area.
