The Theological School of Halki stands at the top of the Hill of Hope (Ümit Tepesi) on Heybeliada (Halki), on the site of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. The school was founded in 1844 and was the main theological school of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Its buildings, except for the 17th-century chapel, were destroyed in the 1894 earthquake and rebuilt; they were inaugurated in 1896. Between 1844 and 1971 the school had close to 1,000 graduates. Teaching stopped in 1971 and the school does not operate today; the buildings are used for conferences. Its library holds a historic collection of books, periodicals and manuscripts.
