In 1844 Patriarch Germanos IV established the Theological School of Halki in the Holy Trinity Monastery on Halki (Heybeliada). The earthquake of 28 June 1894 destroyed all the buildings except one chapel; the new buildings were inaugurated in October 1896 and renovated in the 1950s. The complex includes the church of the Holy Trinity, a library of more than 120,000 volumes and a cemetery where patriarchs and teachers of the School are buried. Teaching at the School stopped in 1971; the buildings were then maintained by the monastery and used for conferences. In September 2023 restoration and extension works on the School buildings began.
