The foundation comprises the church of St Nicholas with its cemetery and the church of St Barbara on Heybeliada (Halki).
The present church of St Nicholas was built in 1857 on the site of an earlier Byzantine church, also dedicated to St Nicholas; two earlier wooden churches had burned down. It is a three-aisled domed church, with a holy spring in front of the narthex. It was badly damaged in the 1894 earthquake and was repaired with the permission of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The tomb of Patriarch Samuel Hantzeris lies behind the sanctuary.
