The church of the Dormition of the Virgin was built in 1835 as the parish church of the village of Panagia (Çınarlı), in the centre of Imbros. In the early 20th century the seat of the Metropolis of Imbros and Tenedos moved from Kastro to Panagia, and since 1905 the church has served as the metropolitan church. It is a three-aisled basilica with a gabled roof; the aisles are divided by columns with a wooden core and a white plaster coating. The European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments conserved the carved wooden decoration and 47 icons of the church, and the work was completed in 2022.
