St George is the church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which moved around 1600 to the former monastery of St George in the Phanar. Patriarch Timothy II rebuilt and enlarged the church in 1614. According to Reşad Ekrem Koçu’s encyclopedia of Istanbul, the church was built anew in 1720, under Patriarch Jeremias III.

In 1797 Patriarch Gregory V began large-scale restoration work, from which the present form of the church largely dates. Under Patriarch Gregory VI (1835–1840) the roof was raised to its present height. In 1941 the church was damaged by fire and was later restored.
