The church of the Panagia Mouchliotissa in Fener dates from the Byzantine period. Around 1281 the monastery and church were rebuilt by Maria Palaiologina, daughter of Emperor Michael VIII and widow of the Mongol ruler Abaqa; after her the church came to be called “of the Mongols”. It is the only Byzantine-era church in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque and remained in use by the Greek Orthodox community.

The building was damaged by the fires of Fener in 1633, 1640 and 1729, and was afterwards repaired and enlarged. A small bell tower was added in 1892.
