Virgin Mary of Souda Orthodox Church, Eğrikapı

The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary called ‘Souda’ and stands at Eğrikapı, in the Ayvansaray neighbourhood. The earliest written record of the parish noted in the community’s 1950 historical booklet is a document from 1649. The present church was rebuilt from its foundations in 1816, as an inscription records. An Ottoman decree (ferman) of August 1850 authorised the renovation of the church and of the community buildings in its precinct, including the school and an asylum. The church was repaired in 1851, 1930 and 1946; the 1946 renovation also included the holy spring. It is a masonry building with a tiled roof and is registered as a protected cultural property.
