The exact founding date of the church of St Nicholas at Cibali is unknown; the church is already recorded in 1538. The church and its holy spring were damaged by fires in 1600 and 1633, and a wooden church, built under a permit issued between 1757 and 1774, burned down shortly afterwards. The present building dates from 1837.

The complex comprises the church, a chapel of St Charalambos and a holy spring. After a renovation, the church reopened for worship on 6 December 1998. Today it has been assigned to serve the Ukrainian-speaking Orthodox community of Istanbul.
