The monastery of St George Karypis stands on the north side of Burgazada (Antigoni), facing Kınalıada (Proti). The year of its foundation is not known; the epithet ‘Karypis’ is explained as coming from the word ‘garip’ (poor, humble), a reference to the monastery’s simplicity. It was a dependency of the Mega Spilaio monastery of Kalavryta, and in 1776 it was granted to the guild of tavern-keepers, who repaired it. The present cruciform church was built in 1897, after the previous one was destroyed in the earthquake of 1894. The church was damaged again in the 1999 earthquake, renovated in 2004, and since June 2005 has held services during the summer season. A holy spring of St Nicholas lies in the garden below the church.
