After 1453 the church of St John the Baptist was renovated twice, in 1759 and in 1817. In the earthquake of 28 June 1894 the building split in two and could not be repaired; the present church, built on the same site, was inaugurated on 11 July 1899. Beneath the church is a crypt associated with St Methodios the Confessor, and near it is a holy spring (ayazma) of St John. The earthquake of 1999 caused serious damage to the church, which was repaired with donations and sponsorship.

The community primary school was founded in 1891 for boys and girls, was destroyed in the 1894 earthquake and reopened on its present site in 1905; it operated until 1974 and has been closed since then. According to the community, in the summer months the church holds regular services every Sunday and on some feast days.
