According to the foundation’s history, the hospital, formerly known as the Yedikule hospital, was built in 1753 by the grocers’ guild. The original wooden building was probably destroyed by fire in 1790 and was rebuilt on a larger scale with the support of Patriarch Neophytos VII. In 1794 the city’s three Orthodox hospitals, at Galata, Pera and Yedikule, were placed under a single administration. A new complex was built at the present site between 1836 and 1838, on land granted by Sultan Mahmud II, and the patients were transferred there in February 1839.

After the damage caused by the 1894 earthquake, new buildings were erected in the early 20th century, and most of today’s buildings date from that period. Today the hospital provides health services in seven buildings, with 222 licensed beds.
