The church is dedicated to the Virgin Gorgoepikoos, while the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s records list it as a church of the Dormition of the Virgin. It was rebuilt in 1691 and burned in 1782; the present building was erected between 1833 and 1835. In the 19th century it was an important pilgrimage site because of a double-sided icon of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos. The church complex was burned during the events of September 1955, when the icon was also lost, and the church was renovated in 1965.

It is a three-aisled basilica with a narthex and a pitched roof; an iron frame with a bulbous roof serves as a bell tower, and there is a holy spring (agiasma) in the narthex. The community had a school as early as 1763, and in 1906 it maintained a six-grade primary school and a girls’ nursery school; the primary school closed in the 1950s.
